The House of Love didn't like to make things easy for their fans (or record store owners for that matter!). This album, neatly entitled 'House Of Love' slots between their debut album 'House Of Love', their follow-up entitled 'House Of Love', their third offering (this album) 'House Of Love', then their fourth - you guessed it - 'House Of Love'. eBay have captured the problem by displaying the sleeve for the fourth release with the tracklisting for their third album - mightily confusing for buyers - so check with the seller if necessary. Because of this problem, fans tend to refer to the albums as 'The German Album' (their debut, released on Rough Trade only in Germany), 'The Creation Album' (their UK-Debut, their first & only album for Creation Records), 'The Butterfly Album' (the sleeve features a butterfly - that's what you'll be receiving if you purchase this CD here!!), 'Spy In The House Of Love' (a compilation album featuring B-Sides with the sleeve shown here - a dog wearing sunglasses), 'Babe Rainbow' (again, this was entitled 'House Of Love' but showed a picture on the sleeve featuring the words 'Babe Rainbow') and finally 'Audience With The Mind' (this WAS actually entitled something other than 'House Of Love'). So - there it is. If you're new to the House Of Love, then it's worth beginning with their Creation album first (if you can find it, hunt down a version of the LP which was released in limited quantities with a freebie 7"). Then I would definitely recommend going for 'Babe Rainbow' - Terry Bickers had left the band by then but this CD arguably contains some of the band's best work. After that, go for this CD. For collectors only - Audience With The Mind - the spark was certainly missing from this release which was a shame - after Babe Rainbow, I expected something spectacular, but they didn't deliver on that particular release. Overall, a great band who at the time were the equivalent of today's indie icons. Pour a glass of wine, put 'Christine' or 'Destroy The Heart' on the CD player and you're in seventh heaven!!Read full review
