Mr Porter's songs cover murder, lynching, cocaine use and prostitution - and that's just in the first few tracks on one CD! I mean, really, how can you not like it? I bought this for esoteric reasons - primarily to see how Porter's popular songs compare with Macca's. I was not disappointed. Musically, they are very similar, both writing wonderful tunes. With lyrics, they also share the ability to break the rules - Macca covers pyromaniacs, stalkers and serial killers among many others. Quite aside from the social and musical history, these CDs are just brilliant to listen to. The sound engineers make a cracking job of bringing to life some very old recordings, including a couple by Porter himself. The choice of individual tracks is also great - the Crosby/Andrews Sisters "Don't Fence Me In" is astonishing with the artists breaking all the rules on timing and harmony. If you want to hear what Porter was all about and/or just listen to some marvellous, timeless and sometimes shocking songs, buy this now. It's brilliant.
