Ask any John Martyn fan, and they will tell you that he is perhaps the most underrated artist in British music history. He is more than unique. He is simply brilliant. From the first haunting notes of "Solid Air", to the last refrain of "Small Hours", the listener is taken on a 17 track journey of self-discovery and soul-searching, penned by the most honest and original songwriter of recent times. If you like Nick Drake or Free (both also from Chris Blackwell's Island Records), then you will simply be blown away by John Martyn. This album has it all. Folk, rock, blues, soul. Martyn defies such categorisation, and reaches beyond genre and style to something unique and wonderful. No words from me can do justice to this important figure in modern British music, and I advise everybody who has an ounce of humanity within them to buy this CD today. John Martyn fans will love this introduction to his music, if you are not a fan give it a try as there are some good tracks and others grow on you. If you like Nick Drake you will enjoy most of this.
