  • You get what you pay for.

I have been using the Harbor Freight 64.5 band saw for several years and while it works great, it is very slow. I have been reading about and watching videos of the Fein 14 inch Slugger for a while now and so I decided to get one to see what all the hoopla was all about. The package came in two business days. It is well boxed from the factory and arrived undamaged. I had quite a bit of metal that needed to be cut so I brought the saw down stairs....it weighs in at about 65 lbs....not light but not all that heavy to me. I set it up on my workbench and plugged it in. The chain that holds the cutter wheel down while moving it is a bit tight and sticks into the hook by the plastic shield with the warning on it. It was easy to bend and I think I will keep the plastic shield on as it keeps the little chips from hitting my face. I always wear eye protection and I also wear hearing protection although this saw is a lot quieter than some of the other cold cut saws I have used and seen. Using it is easy...a two safety switch system. You have to pull both in towards the handle for the saw to run. Cutting 1.5" x .5 inch square bar was very easy. Did 50 cuts in less than 20 minutes...way way faster than the HF band saw. Cuts were accurate and square. Cut some cold rolled 3/4 round and did that very easily. I took my time cutting, not forcing the cut as the blade really does the work easily. I took a tip from an old timey machinist who uses one of these by spraying the blade with WD40 every 5 cuts or so....just a quick spray while the blade is moving on both sides. He says that the blades will last a lot longer by doing this. It does keep the sparks down although this saw has very few of those...a whole lot less than my Milwaukee abrasive chop saw. And NO DUST!!!!! The chips will land mostly in the tray in the back of the saw although some will bounce around outside the saw and onto the work bench. Wear a heavy duty shirt that will not allow the chips to stick to you. I made the mistake of wearing a wool sweater and I was picking chips out of it...not fun. Make sure you have a shop vac and a wide broom handy. Cleaning up is a lot easier with those. The base is flat and cast...not like some of the other saws that have pressed sheet steel and are not all that flat. Not sure of the longevity of the blade but so far it is holding up very well cutting 1/2 inch thick steel. I hear people getting up to a 1000 cuts....we will see. The blades are around 120 dollars or so which breaks down to about 8 cents a cut depending on if you get 1000 cuts. Even at a slightly higher cost per cut, it is well worth the time saved over other cutting methods. I highly recommend this saw. Built better than many of the others and the blade seems to be very well made. Yeah it is a bit more expensive but as the old timey machinist told me....you get what you pay for.

  • Nice clean quiet cuts. Heavy duty, well made, except for the little clear plastic shield.

Works great. Cuts smooth and straight. Much quieter than a usual abrasive type chop saw. The shavings that come off are hot and sharp, so watch where you put your hands when you're done. The only thing I don't like is the little clear plastic shield which seems like an afterthought, and isn't really necessary if you're wearing eye or face protection, so I might just take it off. The saw is pretty heavy, so it's not something I would want to carry around very far.

  • EXCELLENT metal cutting tool.

This cutter cuts so well it startled me. My first cut was a 2" 10 gauge square steel tube. It took less than 10 seconds to cut it. The cut was beautiful and I could touch it immediately. My older but, brand new high RPM cutter (with a metal cutting carbide blade) would have taken 100 seconds, caused the metal to glow red hot and distorted the cut. Considering you get a new blade on the device the price is competetive.

  • Better than I expected!

I build metal fab projects and burned up a 20yr old Dewalt abrasive chop saw a couple weeks ago. I didn't want another abrasive saw, so I started doing research. This Fein Slugger is very impressive and the cuts are smooth and exact. The saw also saves so much time because the metal has smooth edges that are ready to weld. I'm very happy so far.

  • The Fein Slugger is great!

This really is a great saw. The cuts are clean, square and virtually burr free. It's a little pricey compared the the other brands, but it's also more robustly built IMO.

  • Great saw, Good Price, Great value, Worth the money

I should have bought this saw a long time ago. The Fein products have always been good. I decided to pass on the other brands after watching the reviews on YouTube. Some of the brands with the same design were much more expensive an knowing the brand I decided to give it a try. I use it daily, I love this saw. The base is very sturdy, the cuts are almost perfect, the vice on it is very strong... The saw weighs in about 60 lbs. Im very pleased with my purchase of $460. Hope this helps.

  • Journeyman recommendation

I’ve used bandsaws now for a few years and always wondered about the steel saws. Finally splurged for the slugger, I cut a lot of thin wall, .062/.075 square tubing 1.5 45 deg angles. No deflection perfect angles for weld no reconditioning for tight seams to weld. Hope this helps your decision to buy, u won’t regret! • Fein Slugger 14" metal chop saw.

This is a nice well built saw. The platform is solid not stamped sheet metal. The blade cuts through steel with little effort, clean and cool. On mine the degree angle guage is slightly off but I've always verified angle anyway. It's a little more money but we'll worth it.

  • Good machine

Aftet seeing bad reviews of Evolution saws, I waited to find something else. This saw has very solid base, and a good vise. Read the instructions on how to start a cut and this saw is great. Just watch your drops to make sure they don't get kicked into the blade.

  • Awesome

One awesome saw, they are pricey but after 30 years of using abrasive chop saws, this saw is a dream come true. Anyone who is a serious metal worker would loves this saw.
