I decided to buy this "blast from my past" simply after hearing "Last Train to Clarksville" one evening on the TV. This group was HUGE in the mid-60s - as big as, if not bigger than say Take That were. After playing through once I realised I had grown up now and tastes change big style. This was the first manufactured "Boy Band" remember, they didn't know each other at all. Let's put it this way, I dont fancy their chances in front of Simon Cowell today. Yes, there are some good tracks on here, the above mentioned "Last Train to Clarksville" & "I'm Not your Stepping Stone" are still amazingly good in a poppy sort of way to name but 2 of the 6 I like. However, the music sounds SO dated now but I do recognise the fact that The Monkees were lucky to have such a talented songwriter behind them. Glad I have this in my collection though, would put it on "shuffle" amongst other oldies, but only at a 60s/70s night or after a few glasses of wine for a laugh and a sing-song : )Read full review
