SynopsisIt may be Christmastime but on a small, forlorn farm the holiday season is best forgotten, along with painful memories of loved ones lost. Mother Nature has other plans, however, and a chance snowstorm brings together two unlikely hearts, one human and one beast, yet both yearning for comfort, companionship, and that most elusive gift of all, hope. This lustrous jewel of a story, quietly told and perfectly complemented by soft, evocative paintings, reminds even the most cynical of readers that the heart indeed can recover and go on. Jane Monroe Donovan's parents encouraged her to follow her heart and it led to her love of sketching and painting. Her affection for animals is reflected in much of her subject matter. Jane makes her home in Pinckney, Michigan, with her husband Bruce and their two sons, Ryan and Joey. Other members of their family include their two dogs, Belle and Grizzly, a Siamese cat named Maylee, and their two horses, Ameera and Cherokee Rose. In addition to Winter's Gift, Jane has also illustrated three other titles for Sleeping Bear Press: My Teacher Likes to Say; My Momma Likes to Say; and Sunny Numbers: A Florida Counting Book., On Christmas Eve, an old farmer whose wife has died acquires new hope after helping a pregnant mare in a snowstorm., "The star is the most important part of the tree," she would say. "It's a symbol of hope, and no matter how bad things get, you should always have hope." • IT PRECISELY FITS! WINTER'S MIRACLE WOULD ALSO FIT.

A STORY FOR ALL AGES. WELL, 10 AND UP , I'D GUESS. A MAN IS ALONE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS AND THIS IS HIS FIRST CHRISTMAS SINCE HIS WIFE PASSED. A HORSE IS WANDERING, LOST IN THE STORM. SHE IS GIVEN A SAFE PLACE AND GIVES THE MAN A MIRACLE. IT IS SHORT AND AN EXCELLENT READ ALOUD STORY FOR ABOUT 4TH GRADE AN UP. A JR. HIGHER SHOULD BE ABLE TO READ IT AND GET COMPLETE MEANING, BUT IT'S SUCH A GREAT STORY, IT DEFINITLY NEEDS TO BE SHARED.

  • Winter's Gift

This was a lovely story - just on the short side. I would have liked to see the foal's entire first year followed! It had great illustrations and those made the story even more touching. Definitely this is a child's book because of the short length, but I could see myself requesting this book be read to me more than once. it would get a lot of use in multiple-child households and because it is a hard-cover book - it would last a long time.

  • ok price. lousy book

Not impressed with the book. It's about an old man that loses his wife, then a stranded pregnant, wild mare comes to him in the middle of winters storm. Then he gets a black copy-cat colt, fole in the spring from the mare. The book was a big "Horsey miss."

  • Short story, but with touching meaning

This is a sweet and touching story that reminds all of us about the things in life that are important and make life special. We all have gifts around us we do not notice like we should. Many times we tend to dwell on the bad in our lives or our losses. We all have them, but look deeper into what is around us and you may notice, just a small gift that reminds us of the good. Touching book.

Compelling story for the holiday season. Very touching, but does mention the grandmother dying. Beautiful illustrations.

  • Beautiful Story

I work at an animal sanctuary and we were looking for stories to tell the kids around the fire during our Christmas event so I bought this book based on the cover art work and the fact that we have a brown mare named Winter at the sanctuary. I received my book today and fell in love with the story. Can not wait till this weekend to read it to the children that come to our event!

  • A Starry Gift

If you love horses, this one's for you - a heart-warming delightful story for all ages. I was just sorry it wasn't longer! The illustrations are beautiful - definitely recommended! (It would be a wonderful story for a parent or grandparent to read to a child - probably a girl since they adore horses! - to teach many of life's compassionate lessonsl
