Probably not the best Jam album as Jam albums go but far better in my oppinion than their later brass laden albums such as The Gift etc. A very live sounding recording with energy levels seldom found in todays guitar based music. Sometimes naive lyrically (especially the Foxton track London Traffic)but always from the heart with passion.I really like this album and the era it captures so well. Still fresh after nearly 30 years.The album hints at the greatness that The Jam were at the time still to achieve and is a huge leap (from a song writing point of view)from their first effort In The City.I would not let my music collection be without this charming (for want of a better word) album. A must for any true Jam or Weller fan.
This is The Jams second album, the first album. In The City was released in 1977 and was a collection of most of thier songs that they had been playing for a while. With This is a Modern World, the Jam were under pressure from Polydor to release a second album. This is a Modern World was released just 7 months after the release of in the city and it was a bit rushed. I will always love the Jam so for me this album was eccential for my collection. Out of all of The Jams albums. In the City, This is a Modern World, All Mod Con, Setting Sons, Sound Effects and The Gift. (there was also Snap but this album was like a greatest hits) TIAMW is the worsed. But that is by no means a bad thing as it is still a great album, just a bit raw and edgyier than other Jam albums but still very good, especially if you are a die hard fan like myself.Read full review
Bought this album on vinyl years ago and it blew me away. Had forgotten how good it was until my son played a track (the title) and asked me about The Jam.I put it on an old record player and decided then & there to buy it on CD so I could play it in the car. Brilliant band, fantastic records (particularly the early stuff).
