John Schlesinger's screen adaptation of Stan Barstow's 'kitchen-sink' novel tells a gritty story of love in an industrial Lancashire town. Draftsman Vic Brown (Alan Bates) sleeps with Ingrid (June Ritchie), a young typist who works at the same factory as him, but soon loses interest in her. When she discovers that she is pregnant, Vic finds himself burdened with unwanted family responsibilities and an interfering mother-in-law (Thora Hird). But despite these circumstances, Vic and Ingrid try to find a way of living together, working their way towards 'a kind of loving'.

  • Courting from a time gone by.

This film does not appear on normal tv programmes, it may have been X certificate when I was younger, so I was curious. The film is a perfectly normal young couple first engaging with each other and finding love. The actors are superb particularly Thora Hird as the girls mother, she portrays a real dragon. The scenes of northern England are very good, they are captured by a top class director. I would definitely recommend this film for people who are over a certain age.

  • A kitchen sink classic.

John Schlesinger captured a snapshot of northern England, a place which has long since vanished. A Kind of Loving is a really special film for me. Alan Bates and June Ritchie are perfectly cast as Vic and Ingrid, and as much a star is the series of locations chosen within which to set this film. The strength of the film for me is the unremarkable nature of the characters. It isn't a criticism. They are completely believable, they are no one and yet everyone. They fall in love, and Schlesinger seems to capture the magical feeling of meeting 'the one', the stolen glances and the tentative moves towards partnership. Schlesinger also captures the imbalance of feelings, the more mundane reality once the lustre has faded; and the presence exerted by circumstances overtaking the couple. The film evokes the transience of romance, which is something which we can all understand. This is just my opinion. I love this film nonetheless. I wish June Ritchie had made more films, but this work alone is enough to memorialise a great talent.
