  • A lot better than I expected and well worth the money 9.5/10

This arrives in a well packed box with heavy card internal packing and no polystyrene, which is good. Inside are 2 speakers with solid chipboard cabinets which actually sound OK. However they only have one driver each and the HiFi itself is capable of a lot more detail and bass with better speakers. I am using some Eltax bookshelf speakers and the sound is very good. As well as the speakers there is the remote control, which is neat and has a carbon fibre effect on the button side. The batteries were included in the box. There is also the power adapter which plugs directly into the wall. It has a long cable and having a separate power supply makes sense as this keeps electrical interference to a minimum. There is also a 44 page English manual which is easy to follow. The HiFi itself has DAB, DAB+, FM, CD, Bluetooth, front mounted USB and an Aux in socket around the back. This socket uses a 3.5mm jack rather than separate phono leads which I prefer. There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack but this is on the back of the unit rather than on the front. The volume control isn't analogue but allows the selection of 15 different volume levels which can make finding the ideal volume more difficult. This and the 3.5mm jacks are my only real complaints about the system. The HiFi includes a telescopic radio aerial which picks up a good range of stations. When first started the HiFi scanned and stored over 50 stations and correctly set the date and time before I had time to read the 'how to set the date/time' section of the manual. Everything works well with excellent sound quality but the CD drive is slightly noisy when it first reads a disc. The colour screen might look like a gimmick but is actually really useful as it displays radio channel, program and artist/track information in an easy to read way and is far better than the usual single line LED on most budget systems. The volume control also acts as a selection jog-wheel with a press in to select menu entries which can be a little fiddly, the remote control has an OK button to make a selection. As well as the above the system also includes an excellent Alarm with sleep function. There is an equalizer which as well as the usual 'Jazz', 'Classic' etc options allows for separate adjustment of bass and treble. You can store a range of preset radio stations on both FM and DAB/DAB+ frequencies. The system looks modern with a wood surround that matches the speakers, the front is black with the bottom third having a metal finish around the buttons. The system has really good sound and a lot of features, you will have to spend considerably more to find anything with more features or better sound. I am really happy with this HiFi and apart from the rear headphone jack and volume control I would rate it as perfect.

  • Small retro hifi

My daughter wanted to play CDs and likes the retro look of this unit. It can also stream through Bluetooth so she’s not limited to her CD collection. She set it up easily and it sounds good, considering the price - single driver in each speaker and a hole to improve the bass. Easily loud enough for a large bedroom, bass quite boomy, treble not as clear as some standalone Bluetooth speakers I’ve heard at this price.
