About this product

Product Information

Said syndrome is named after the 19th century French writer who, so overwhelmed by the beauty of Italian architecture, slipped into a fugue state for days. In Dario Argento's film, Roman detective Anna Manni (Asia Argento, the director's daughter) does the same in Firenze's Uffizi gallery but on recovery, finds herself heading an investigation into a serial killer that involves mistaken identities, psychoanalysis and extreme violence. In Italian with subtitles.

  • An underrated Argento Classic

A lot of Argento’s fans think Opera was his final great film. I think it’s The Stendhal Syndrome. Stendhal is a stylishly directed character study supported by eye-catching and occasionally mind-warping visuals that’s let down, like most of Argento’s later movies, by a script that’s too lightweight for the story’s ambitions. Having said that, Argento has always been a twisted visionary whose work demands to be experienced rather than stripped back and analysed. From that point of view, Stendhal is an atmospheric power(charnel)house that, together with Sleepless, proves the maestro was a force to be reckoned with right up to the end of the nineties. As for what came later, Mother of Tears - despite being a major disappointment in so many ways - is also ready for re-evaluation.
