SynopsisServing on a jury at the trial of a prostitute arrested for murder, Prince Nekhlyudov is horrified to discover that the accused is a woman he had once loved, seduced and then abandoned when she was a young servant girl. Racked with guilt at realizing he was the cause of her ruin, he determines to appeal for her release.
The book was at a very good price and is in excellent condition. Great value.
I've spent the last 7-8 years reading, studying, enjoying, and re-reading classic Russian novelists. I'm honed in also on particular translators. I've learned that is important. I have not read Tolstoy's 'Resurrection'. Rosemary Edmonds' translation rates fairly well. The book was at a very good price and is in excellent condition. Great value. Thanks. "I'll be back!" - Arnie
Compelling novel one struggles to put down without finishing.
Tolstoy is a master among masters.
For a Christian, like me, I find it very sad that Tolstoy did not journey far enough to find the true Christ and the hope and satisfaction of repentance and forgiveness. His journey through the life of this nobleman is reflective of the sadness of his own life and almost certainly he died not really knowing that there was a hereafter. Somehow Jesus Christ, the son of God who came and gave his life for sinners, whom all of us are, was never internalized by his prime character. Hence, the truth that Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us was never understood, owned and believed. Any kind of achieved feelings of being OK, being right with the world never take one far enough. Only finding Jesus Christ by kneeling at the metaphorical cross, admitting we are sinners and allowing him to change us and come into our lives can make a certain, eternal difference.
