I first heard "Talking Heads" in the common room at school in 1977. The track was "Don't Worry About The Government" and I really liked it. The lyrics drew me in but I think it was the peculiar vocal talents of David Byrne that got me hooked. Most of the wages from my Saturday Job that week went on the single [I couldn't afford the album but I had to have that song]. After hearing "Don't Worry About The Government" I flipped it over and found "Pulled Up" on the other side. I didn't like it initially but it was a powerful track, Byrne's distinctive voice carried it off wonderfully and it quickly grew on me. I started saving my money and when I had enough I bought the album [even though I already had two of the tracks]. It was only the second album I had ever bought and 30 years on I still love it. In work and financially better off [and having recently purchased a CD player] I bought "TH: 77" on CD when it came out in 1987. I listened to all my old favourites over again. And, guess what? They were still as good as ever. "Don't Worry About The Government" is still my favourite track and would most certainly make it onto that Desert Island with me although I would be heart broken to leave "Psycho Killer" behind. Other notable mentions include "No Compassion", "Tentative Decisions" and the remaining seven tracks of course. "Talking Heads: 77" is one of their best all round albums, second only to "More Songs About Buildings and Food" [see my review] , and probably one of the best debut albums ever released. Back in '77 it was fresh and new. It was exciting and revolutionary. It dared to be different and succeeded spectacularly. Back in '87 when the CD was released I was surprised to find nothing had changed, it was still as fresh as it was 10 years earlier, it was still raw, it still had an edge and Byrne's voice still did it for me. For anyone who loves lyrics you will be glad to know the accompanying booklet lists them all together with the original cover notes. If you've never heard "Talking Heads" I strongly recommend trying this album first. Oh Yeah, and they have one of the sexiest bass players of any band past or present... Regards tbodRead full review
For a debut album Talking Heads exceeded expectations. Each track has a different feel but overall stays within the rock/pop genre. The clarity of recording and fresh approach to rhythms does not sound at all dated after more than thirty years. Singer David Byrne's slightly odd vocals may put some listeners off but this listener enjoys the sound of unforced vocals for a change. A good starting point to new listeners and a good forerunner to the excellent follow up (More Songs About Buildings & Food)
