Like the previous two I bought this album as soon as it hit the streets. That makes THREE albums in less than 18 months. A bit of a stretch by anyone's standards, how could they possibly keep the standard up? Fear not for although this album has echoes of both its predecessors it, like Newton standing on the shoulders of giants, manages to see further and achieve greater things. I think I can say without fear of contradiction that this is their greatest album ever. Needless to say I had to buy the CD if only to save the needle from wearing right through the vinyl! I was surprised to discover the Mellotran - a creature from a bygone age - featured heavily on this album and suspect the uniquely distinctive sound of that classic instrument contributed to its enormous success. We start off with 'The new Stone Age' where harsh electronic percussion, like a heartbeat, lays a solid foundation for the rest of the track. Strong synthesisers, great lyrics and McCluskey's distinctive voice combine to great effect. A brilliant first track which sets the standard for the rest of the album... The Mellotron with its distinctive sound marches in, pushes everything else aside, settles down and well and truly makes itself at home. 'Architechture & Morality', the title track of the album, is a quirky little number which is difficult to describe musically, suffice it to say it is brilliant. This is classic OMD, not to be missed. 'Georgia' is an upbeat song with some clever effects. It sounds like snippets of dialogue stolen from television programmes has been cut into the background. Strange but very effective. We end, as we started, on a high note. A wonderfully gentle track called, appropriately enough, 'The begining And The End'. "This is where we start... Thus we reach the end..." The perfect wind down to a thrilling action packed ride through the sonic soundscape that is OMD. Perfect, absolutely perfect. It's incredible when you think about it but not only did this album get to number three in the charts but it was strong enough to support not one, not two but THREE Top Five singles as well. I can't imagine any modern band pulling that off. If you could only have one OMD CD in your collection it would have to be this one. Their other albums have some great tracks. Their other albums have some brilliant tracks. But, their other albums have some tracks that are only good and some that are not so good. This is their ONLY album with no GOOD tracks. Every track is a GREAT track or a BRILLIANT track. Nothing less. This is a stupendous album and you simply must have it. Do an eBay search, you should be able to grab yourself a copy for five or six quid including P&P. I promise you, you won't regret it. The only way to improve this CD would be to include the lyrics in a little booklet inside the CD case. I love lyrics and hate it when the record company [usually Virgin] deprive me of the beauty of the printed word. Finally, I'm sorry I haven't commented on every track but eBay Reviews are limited to 3,500 characters and I could easily write more than that on each and every track of this brilliant CD.
