It’s gothic, baroque, theatrically dramatic, sometimes silly and absurd, and not to be taken seriously. The tone is supernatural and there’s no limit to it, so prepare for a whirlwind of spellbinding special effects - there’s so much of it that you get caught in a hurricane from up to end; everything changes, moves, and constantly transforms: the characters and the sets. The script is a tangle of confusion and holds together thanks to its restless pace and action. Richard Roxburgh (Dracula) is the perfect grand villain, extravagant, demonic and sympathetic. The rest of the cast is arguable in credibility. Without Roxburgh and the whole 3D enchilada there would be no film - even the directing is swallowed up by the continual clashing of visual effects. I bought this dvd after seeing it in the cinema. I'm an art student and have an interest in the dark side, gothic stuff, demons, vampires, spirits, ghosts, mythical creatures etc. The Van Helsing character is loosely based on the Dr Van Helsing in Bram Stokers dracula. I say loosely becuase stokers van helsing used his brain to defeat dracula rather than his oh so cute tushy! Although some parts of this film can be a bit cheesy it more than makes up for it in special effects and costume. I like the references to other gothic classics such as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and also Frankenstein. You get the impression of a medieval James Bond with this film. He has some cool gadgets despite the film being set in the past. One of my favourite quotes from the film: [Dracula sees Igor poking the werewolf with a cattle prod] Count Vladislaus Dracula: Igor! Igor: Yes, Master? Count Vladislaus Dracula: Why do you torment that thing so? Igor: It's what I do. I would recommmend this film for boys and girls. For the ladies u have Hugh Jackman looking rather dashing as Van Helsing. Also Dracula is a bit of a babe too - he can bite me any time. For the gents u have Anna played by Kate Beckinsale. There are also some cool gadgets. Overall a definate 5 out of 5 for a saturday night flick but if you're looking for some real history and insight into Dracula and the vampire legends you would do better to read Bram Stoker - which btw is really good and much better than i expected.Read full review
I bought this film on video when it first came out, but DVD has a great advantage over video, it includes Extras. This 2 Disk Edition has commentaries with cast and producers as well as bloopers and hidden set cameras, it really brings new insite into the making of the film and explores the actors understanding and feelings towards their characters and how the film was made. I admit a great bonus for this film is Hugh Jackman, (I am a fan) but i would have watched it for the amazing effects and the re-telling of these classical horror stories - Frankenstein, Dracula, and Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde.
amazing film, set with hugh jackman as van helsing, the legendary monster hunter. sent to romania to kill a vampire known as dracula leads him on a quest to save a princess who also wishes the tyrant vampire dead, however along the way he must not only deal with the enemy he was sent to kill, but also the wolfman, frankensteins monter, igor, and three of draculas brides.. and also jekel and hyde makes an appearnce! amazing storying and fantastic graphics make this gothic adventure well worth watching!! five star!!
I bought this dvd because it is the kind of film we like to watch, eg horror, fantasy etc. We thought it were very good, can't make a brew till its finished stuff! Good graphics and characters. Definately to be recommended to anyone into horror, fantasy movies.
the discs are fine no marks or anything else on them ive watched the film 4 times from i bought them
Bought off ebay but was scratched so i went to the shop and bought a new one. fantastic film. cross between blade and the matrix graphics and quality is 10/10 action packed film. would definetly recommend. film doesnt dissapoint its audience. already watched it several times and can easily watch it again.
