Alma Cogan was known as the woman with the laugh in her voice. As a child I remember my Mum singing along with her catchy hits & then singing them to me. I'm sure that for any kid of the fifties/sixties, logged away in some corner of your brain memories of all these songs are still there. Better than that every UK hit Alma Cogan had is here on this excellent collection. The Beatles had a successful knack of jamming in the chorus as many times as possible in a song; so did Alma Cogan. More than that though, listen to the lyrics - they're extremely funny. A good example is 'Twenty Tiny Fingers'. She awakes her husband in the middle of the night saying "Dear Let's Go". He rushes her to hospital to be presented with twins. I'll leave you to enjoy the rest of the story as it unravels through this memorable song. Another good example is 'Middle of the House" where the Railroad Company have laid the railway line right through the centre of the house. Alma has to temporarily stop singing the song whilst the 05:09 comes through. Good sounds of steam engines at speed. The end of the song is a bit of a shock though. Finally there's tender romance here too. If your loved one is in your arms & you play 'Little Things Mean a Lot' guaranteed they'll melt as Alma sings "Blow me a kiss from across the room - Give me your hand when I've lost the way - Little Things mean a lot." Sadly Alma died at 34 but what a legacy of wonderful songs she left behind. She had more UK hits than any other lady in the fifties. Dreamboat was her only UK Number One.Read full review

What like about it is that it has most of the songs that wanted to have on. Decided to buy it because the old 78 that had of the two songs in particular that wanted (Twenty Tiny Fingers and Never Do a Tango With an Eskimo) has been mislaid, and so was pleased to learn there were CDs that contained both of these songs. Ofcourse, tend to feel that the character of her voice is not as nice as is heard on the old 78 record, but it is still good quality and pleased that with the CD can play it in the car!
I decided to buy it as I have been asked to sing some of her songs. It gives a good feel of her style of music.
