Darius Gaiden is a 2D side-scrolling shooter for one or two players. Players begin each game with three ships and continues. The goal is to destroy as many enemies as possible and defeat a large boss at the end of each level. Most levels also include a middle boss which can either be destroyed or converted. <br><br>The space-fighter has two firing modes: an air shot, and a ground bomb. Included in the game are power-ups which can be obtained during combat in order to increase air firepower, bomb firepower, or give players a temporary shield. As a last ditch defense, the fighter can launch an ultra-powerful bomb called "The Black Hole Bomb." Three bombs are included on your ship when you begin and more can be discovered and collected. <br><br>There are seven levels in Darius Gaiden, subdivided into 28 zones. After a level boss is defeated, players choose what they want to do next from the available options. Seven possible endings exist.

If you own a Saturn and you don't have this game...
If you love you some bullet hell, this game is worth every dime. This is a great next step in the Darius series if you were a fan of Darius Twin. The colour palette is bright and captivating. The power up system gives you an jenga like experience as you try to reach overpowered status without the fruits of your efforts being stolen away. There is variability in the level selection; leavding way to tons of re-playability. The game is 1 or 2 player, and plays like an arcade cab in that aspect. Also, the soundtrack for this game is amazing! I wasn't expecting it to be as damn catchy as it was; if you're a fan of the Fifth Element soundtrack, then you're gonna like this. If you've been waiting to pick this one up, get to it yesterday!

Great game! Worth the money!
Darius Gaiden is one of the best shmups on the Saturn. Tonnes of replay, fantastic graphics and an amazing soundtrack push this to the front of the pack. It may be less known than Radiant Silvergun but just as good, if not better.
