  • The One and Only - engaging and funny

A light but entertaining film chronicling the downfall of a WAG in Newcastle upon Tyne, who is married to an Italian footballer and who discovers that he is cheating on her with a girl from the nail salon. At the same time another couple are trying to adopt a child. Then two of the couples meet and the connection between them appears to be instant. But can it survive the antics of the footballer and the homicidal desire of the other female lead to acquire a child, by fair means or foul. Although the film is light-hearted and, indeed, possesses several laugh-out-loud moments at the same time it deals with serious subjects such as childlessness, poverty and adultery. Some of the funniest moments in the film for the reviewer concerned the antics of Stella, best friend of the female lead and played by Patsy Kensit, for whom the slobby best friend of the male lead is like catnip.
