Take one shallow superficial jerk who judges everything - and everyone - by outward appearences. That's Hal (played by Jack Black). Hal always makes a beeline for the 'obvious beauty' - nothing less than a supermodel for our Hal - and he is invariably knocked back. Not because he's ugly but because he's a shallow superficial jerk. Take a famous TV hypnotist / motivational speaker - Tony Robbins (played by himself) who sees things very differently from Hal. Trap them together in a lift for a couple of hours and... after a lot of talking and some heavy soul searching Robbins gives Hal a truly wonderful gift, from then on whenever he looks at someone he will see not their true physical form but an image based on what is inside them. He will see their inner beauty or, in some cases, their inner hideousness. Unaware of the gift he has been given Hal wonders why his luck with the ladies has suddenly changed - gorgeous (to him) women are suddenly finding him totally irresistible! His best mate is similarly amazed because - to him - Hal has suddenly, and inexplicably, taken a shine to really fat, ugly women. Then the inevitable happens, Hal falls in love! To him Rosemary (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) is the most beautiful woman in the world and he is the luckiest man alive. Hal's best mate sees thing differently (quite literally) and tracks down Robbins to 'cure' Hal of his gift or, as he sees it, his curse. There are some truly funny moments and some classic one liners but, to me, this is not a comedy and in many ways it is not really a funny film. It is a genuinely sensitive and deeply touching film that never fails to make me cry. The soundtrack, although unobtrusive and understated, has some really fantastic songs including; .. "Baby, Now That I've Found You" by The Foundations .. "After The Gold Rush" by Neil Young .. "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" by Edison Lighthouse This is a film I try to watch a couple of times a year, sometimes more, and everytime is as good as the last and that's something that just can't be said of many films! If you haven't seen this film yet, I heartily recommend you do so. And do it now, don't waste another second! If you have seen it but don't yet have your own copy then you should be able to pick up your own copy on eBay for three or four quid including P&P. Well worth the price... A truly great film, get yours, pop it in the player, sit back and enjoy! Regards tbodRead full review
