This is classic film noir - and a must for anyone who wants to see a film that combines drama, plot twists and turns - as well as superb performances from the boyishly handsome Dana Andrews as the the outwardly cynical cop who falls for the charms and beauty of the woman who gives the film its title. Directed by noir master Otto Preminger, it is still acclaimed today for everything from the innovative way the narrative unfolds to the exquisite way each scene is shot. This film is essential viewing, whether you are an aficionado of the genre of film noir - or simply appreciate a film that will have you hooked from the first notes of the haunting title tune Laura to the final denoument when the killer is finally revealed.
I saw this film when it was doing the rounds of cinemas in Croydon back in the late 1940s or early 1950s and have never forgotten it. So great to see it again on DVD and it still remains one of the best films of its genre. Moody, mysterious and haunting, with a wonderful theme: "Laura". This tune remains one of the "standards" and will never die. The two lead stars (Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney) are matched by Clifton Webb and a youngish Vincent Price in acting ability. The story has a fascinating twist or two and if you've never seen this film you're in for a treat. Watch it with the lights dimmed and don't let anything or anybody interrupt you!
