This 1981 adaptation is faithful to the book by Evelyn Waugh. An excellent drama, which I missed when first broadcast 40 years ago. Although this is not biographical, Waugh deals with his contemporaries from student life at Oxford through World War two anf afterwards. Waugh was a convert to Catholicism and was in favour of an aristocracy. Today they look over privileged, and although they don’t have quite the profile they once did in society, their modern moneyed equivalents are not inherently better people, in my opinion. I read the novel just before watching this boxed set. It was a delight.
