In its chilling opener, THE CLEARING paints a classic portrait of rich man vs. poor man, showing the morning routines of two very similar characters. Though they are both white, middle-aged, and of middle-class stature, the nuances that differentiate them--their houses, their wives, their clothing--jump off the screen with stark clarity. With a slightly jumbled chronology, the subsequent events come not with shock but with devastating realness. Wayne Hayes (Robert Redford) is in his Lexus on his way to work when Arnold Mack (Willem Dafoe) kidnaps him. It all happens calmly with purposeful execution. Mack wants money, and will use Hayes as ransom to get it. The film then turns to Hayes' elegant wife (Helen Mirren, who is a tour-de-force in this quietly emotive role) and well-bred family, who are saddled with a ransom negotiator and FBI surveillance, and are forced to face the tragedy. With no outright violence, no sudden bursts of surprise, and no wasted time, THE CLEARING is a captivating, masterful suspense thriller. Debut director Pieter Jan Brugge works from a screenplay by Justin Haythe in telling this deeply unsettling tale. Hayes and Mack (the superb and intense pairing of Redford and Dafoe) argue their opposite points of view through conversations about family, morality, and power. Meanwhile, safe at home, Hayes' wife undergoes ups and downs reevaluating her marriage and her love for her husband as investigators dig through the intricacies and secrets of their lives.

I love watching Robert Redford - whatever the film. Odd role for Helen Mirren though. I enjoyed watching it as I had not seen it before. Odd ending too.

The Clearing
It was a very good film, good story line. It was quite psychological which is why i bought it. It was about a couple who had sort of drifted apart but still in love. The husband gets kidnapped and the wife is heartbroken. It turns out she knew of an affair but still loves and wants her husband back. There is a big ransom for his release which she pays but her husband is killed by the kidnapper. The husband and the kidnapper have quite in-deepth conversations about each other whilst in each others company. The ending is sad as they both realise that they loved each other very very much.

"The Clearing"
I saw this dvd on an advert on another dvd it looked amazing something that i would like as im a dvd fanatic lol.. but em as soon as i started to watch it i wasnt impressed it was an okay dvd acting was good but there wasnt much of a story line to it, the ending isnt very good it doesnt explain a thing and your left hanging basically its very limp. it is worth a watch but dont get your hopes set high as its quite dissapointing. i would reccomend other films like law abiding citizen, fracture etc. if your into action / violence

It was an interesting film, but not as good as I expected from the cast. It wasn't a waste of my time, but slightly disappointed.
