A go-it-alone US SF agent (Val Kilmer) and his wet-behind-the-ears partner (Derek Luke) are called in to rescue (Kristen Bell) the daughter of the US President: she has been kidnapped by a girl-smuggling prostitution ring who, thanks to her new look/hairstyle, haven't a clue who they have in their clutches. The agents are tasked with finding the girl before the press catches wind of the story as, if the story leaks and the kidnappers realize who they have, they're likely to kill her. Typically for a Mamet movie, there's more to it than just that, though... Variously described as 'a thought provoking well scripted thriller', 'one of the best movies you've never seen' and a 'movie (that) will meet your (Mamet) expectations', Spartan also has its critics: 'Average Mamet, but above-average Kilmer', 'certainly not flawless Mamet', 'I just didn't get that it was top-shelve (sic!) stuff'; but it's a cool if austere, dark and shadowy vehicle for Kilmer (remember Batman Forever?). A well directed, thought-provoking, far from run-of-the-mill political thriller that's well worth watching.Read full review
A secret service agent is called into action when the daughter of a government official appears to have been kidnapped...however what eventually unravels is far more sinister! David Mamet's intelligent script and deft direction make this a highly watchable thriller, with twists and turns a-plenty. Val Kilmer excels in this film, refraining from his usual over-acting to deliver an excellent measured performance. Presented in 2.40:1 Widescreen and featuring 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound, this DVD also features a commentary by Kilmer himself and a theatrical trailer.
Hard-boiled thriller about a ruthless, tough secret agent (a hard-guy performance from Val Kilmer) called in to investigate the abduction of a high government official's stroppy teenage daughter. Could she be in the hands of white slavers or is she part of an even more sinister plot? As this is written and directed by David Mamet, you will be guessing right up to the final frame.
I'd never heard of this before watching it so came with an open mind. I was pleasantly suprised. I rate Val Kilmer as an actor and he puts in an excellent performance here. Standard secret service, special forces spy stuff at the beginning quickly turns into something a lot more sinister. All in all a couple of hours of decent entertainment 4/5
