Many cameo cold-war characters and plotlets are set against the gathering cataclysm. Peter Sellars plays many of them; black humour at its best. A commie hating airbase commander launches his wing of strategic bombers loaded with H-bombs to Russia and fixes it so only he knows the recall code. Unfortunately the Russians have built a Doomsday machine that will destroy mankind if they are bombed - only they havent got round to announcing it yet. Mandrake guesses the recall code and his trying to call up the president from a payphone to give him the recall code for the H-bombers and being a dime short is brilliant. The aerial views of the B52s flying around 100 feet- i think its over arctic Canada and not Russia - are breathtaking. And the ingenuity of the Texan pilot who flies his damaged plane under the radar to an alternative target thereby avoiding the whole Russian air force sent to his primary targets by the Americans ... The relentless music of 'Johnny came marching' builds as the pilot rewires the bomb-bay release - damaged in a missile strike - and at the last moment he succeeds and rides his H-bomb down to the target with a Yeehaa!! Goodbye mankind - or is it, as back in the Pentagon Dr Strangelove is calculating the numbers of nubile females necessary to breed a replacement race with key male leaders down in the deep mines of Idaho...Read full review
