Excellent: Savalas gives consistently superb performances as the cult, middle-aged NY homicide lieutenant. He's convincingly courageous, brilliant, tough, and sympathetic. Kojak is an early example of a counter-culture detective, who values true justice over the `book' or pressure from his superiors and the press. The writing is also excellent. The early episodes have complex, intelligent, and believable plots, but are also designed to demonstrate particular aspects of Kojak's character. Having recently watched Hawaii 5-O and the Streets of San Francisco, I would have to say that the writing on Kojak is even better. Like those other shows, a lot of Kojak is shot on location in New York. As the light is not as good in NY, the daytime picture quality suffers a little. However, Kojak has access to far better artificial lighting for the interior shots, which are as good as a contemporaneous motion picture. Good: Frazer, as the aging Capt O'Neil, is the best supporting actor. Crocker is decent enough, though Stavros is just there as a heavy-set comic clown.Read full review

When Kojak was first shown on TV I thought that the theme tune was not as good as some American cop shows, such as CANNON or STARSKY & HUTCH, and I still think that today, however I do think that some of the writing for the stories is sometimes better than the other series. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching this, it is from an era of great cars too, and to see them and how people dressed at the time reminds me of my childhood. All in all a great show with great writing and great characters.

I caught a couple of episodes on Satellite, and for the price, thought this would be good entertainment. I was right - great cast and writing, very good 1970's-movie-style realism, and Kojak is such a watchable character. A very superior series, rendered in decent quality for dvd. Great fun to dip into.
