    Tough, gritty, realistic and nostalgic.

    A gritty British crime drama from the late fifties (1959) with some excellent acting from a quality cast and on location (Manchester and the Saddleworth Moors area ) filming. Forget all the so-called 'amazing' crime dramas currently on tv. Hell is a City delivers truly workman like performances. Also shows the slums and poverty - from which crime eminates - of Britain ( Northwest England ) even 15 years after the end of WW2. Single ends, shared toilets and kids playing in slum streets. In sharp contrast it shows the wealth and comfort of the well-to-do suburbs of Manchester despite the grime and dirty of the 'Empire Making' factories and the slagheaps. Definitely a film to watch several times. Stanley Baker, Billie Whitelaw and Vanda Godsell are particularly a stand-out in the acting honours.

    A great film evocative of the era. I've seen it a few times and will watch it again. It's that sort of film. Stanley Baker and Billie Whitelaw never fail to entertain.
