ReviewsThese six little books deal with the heights and depths to which animals may go, the extremes of heat and cold they tolerate, the speeds they travel, and the ages they attain. The books provide a very elementary introduction to the ideas of adaptation to differing environmental conditions. Each volume is arranged similarily: In its approximately two dozen pages, it poses a basic question about how far animals progress along the particular extreme presented and gives about eight examples of animals that progress even further along that continuum. Each animal is described over two pages via a very simple color sketch and one or two short sentences offering facts that usually relate to the extreme condition being explored. All of the books use the pedagogically sound device of including a scale on each page, showing where each animal stands along the extreme continuum relative to the one described just previously. All end, quite rightly, by posing the question of whether there may exist other animals that fall yet further along that extreme. Each book also includes both a brief list of "Extreme Fun Facts" at the end that provides a little more information about each of the animals examined earlier and a section titled "To Learn More" that offers some library and Web resources for further exploration. A short glossary defines some of the words used in the text, and a brief index could help young readers find the specific animals mentioned.
