Additional InformationBeginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story FAREWELL TO THE MASTER, becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come 250 million miles to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience, Helen Benson (Patricia Neal), and her inquisitive son, Bobby (Billy Gray). Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message, and the government's witch hunt for the alien. Made during the cold war--when Americans were obsessed with the destructive capabilities of the atomic bomb--THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, thanks to its beautiful pacing, excellent dialogue, and haunting score by Bernard Herrmann, is still a treat for contemporary audiences.

    Everything you ever wanted to know about 'The Day The Earth Stood Still.

    An Englishman Martian travels to the Earth in peace and threatens mankind with anihilation. The situation is so grave that news presenters must wear hats during broadcasts. Star of the show is the sinister 'Rhoebutt' Gort. He's the infinitely strong silent type who dispenses justice quickly and without emotion. He also has a way with the ladies . This is THE classic Sci Fi movie. Genuinely spine tingling with some great cinematography. There is superb use of light and shadows to create dramatic and truly unsettling images. Good picture quality but alas only in TV aspect ratio 4:3 in this release. A great watch, the inspiration for many to follow.

    Very watchable film with lots of action

    Excellent film. This is the one 1 wanted because it's original good acting, enjoyable and engrossing. I found myself cheering on the spaceman. I'd been looking for this exact film because I'd only seen it once before. Disc came as new display case intact, delivery was excellent delivered in specified time.

    "Klaatu barada nikto"

    So says Michael Rennie (Klaatu) to his protector robot Gort on a visit to earth which is heading towards atomic annihilation! Will they take his warning on board? Great 1950s sci-fi film which I saw way back in the day and never forgot. I bought it recently to pair up with the inferior remake version in 2008 which the grandchildren are more familiar with so they could compare. So spoil yourself and try it out you, like my grandchildren, you wont be disappointed.
