SynopsisA lighthouse standing majestically on a scenic shoreline conjures images of heroic sailors safely guided to port. But which lighthouse is it and what is its history? Here is a guide to identifying 161 of North America's most famous beacons. Each entry includes a full-page color photograph opposite a smaller historical image, a brief history, construction facts, a schematic of the floor plan, and notable technical features and specs. Lighthouses include Portland Head, Boston Harbor, Cape Hatteras, Grosse Point, Cape Blanco, and Point SurPerfect. Endorsed by the American Lighthouse Foundation, this take-along guide can be used for coastal or Great Lakes driving vacations, from Newfoundland to Southern California, where each featured beacon can be easily identified and fully enjoyed.

  • Lighthouse

As a retired Naval Officer and submarine officer of the deck I truely appreciate lighthouses. I intend to make a Great Lakes lighthouse safari, and whenever i am on vacation near the coast I located the nearest light house or two or three and see them first hand. Even though I am a senior citizen, I do not hesitate to climb the stairs to the observation level of the lighthouse. As I a Christian I appreciate the light as a beacon that represents safe navigation, both for the sailor an ship and as a metaphor for navigating through life. .
