Dinosaur Jr's independent classic originally from the 'Blast First' label. It spawned the single 'Freak Scene', an anthem for alternative and underground music. 'Freak Scene' was their UK breakthrough record. Still heavily distorted in sound, 'Bug' has even more melodies than its predecessors. J Mascis is full-time singer-songwriter. The album is tighter and more conventional. J even writes the majority of drum lines for Murph to play. He is shaping the band into that which will eventually record the mighty 'Where You Been'. J Mascis's vocals are perhaps similar to Young's, but manage to still be original and unique to J. He has that lazy drawl which suits his music and style. Dinosaur Jr (and The Pixies and Black Flag) initiated the early 90s 'Grunge' explosion, influencing such albums as Nirvana's 'Nevermind'. Lou Barlow would leave after this album to concentrate full-time on Sebadoh. Next for Dinosaur Jr would be their first major label album 'Green Mind'. Interestingly, Mascis rates 'Bug' as his least favourite. I like it - but 'Where You Been' and 'Hand It Over' still rate their finest with me. 'Bug' is worth listening to if you want an early introduction to Dinosaur Jr - hear their raw sound and listen to a J Mascis developing into the singer songwriter musician that we know today.
