Middle of the road
I know Steinbeck's story of the East of Eden very well and thought I'd see what the film was like, especially with James Dean heading the cast. It was fine, I'm not going to say it was great, I was slightly disappointed about where the film starts in terms of the lives of these people being almost over and it focuses on the last third of the book. James Dean is fine, a little less dynamic that what I was expecting. The actress who plays Abra is very endearing and quite enchanting and her character is the best developed. If this was a film that I had to watch for an assignment I would have said it was disappointing only in so much as it begins near the end. If you are expecting the whole story then this is not for you. It is a lovely piece of cinematography and certainly better than the Grapes of Wrath, which is clearly studio filmed with no apologies but then it is much older.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Still the Best
James Dean is splendid as Cal, and the film itself , based on the book East of Eden, is a wonderful and sensitive adaptation.
