love DR Who like everything dislike nothing its brill xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Doctor Who has always has a voice defined by the decade each in tune with its era and this holds true to the new Doctor Who. This Doctor is almost child-like in his enthusiasm and wonder. Featuring the Doctor as played by Christopher Eccleston (Shallow Grave, Gone in 60 Seconds), infusing the character with great intensity and humanity, while remaining mysterious and alien, along with his companion Rose played by Billie Piper, growing from an awed slacker to a seasoned space adventurer. However, the format of the show has changed to 45 min. parts, some 2 parters ending with cliffhangers, some without. Like any "new" series there are good episodes and not-so-good ones, the upside here is MOST of these are great episodes! The 40 year history of the series isn't squeezed into one pilot, through-out the year we get a trickle of back-story, some old, like his time/space machine looks like a police-call-box, and some new back-story, like the fact that his race, the TIMELORDS have been wiped out in a TIME WAR. The PILOT story: "ROSE" introduces his new companion Rose Tyler who is attacked by mannequins (or AUTONS) in the department store where she works. She meets the Doctor and the pair end up fighting to save the world. The pacing of this one, like most of the 13 new episodes, is like lightning, and the Autons have never been scarier. The TARDIS (interior) has never looked better or bigger. Next in "THE END of the WORLD" The Doctor offers Rose a chance to go anyplace, anytime, they end up 5 Billion years in the future above the Earth just before it ends. But someone has sabotaged the very observation satellite they're on. Not a bad episode, it shoots very high with a "Restaurant at the End of the Universe" motif and cinematically accomplishes it, also reveals that the Doctor is the "Last of the Timelords." In the 3rd story the Doctor and Rose meet Charles Dickens and what appears to be ghosts animating the dead! 4 Weddings and a Funeral's Simon Calow plays the Victorian author brilliantly and the Victorian look of the episode is well executed. The 2005 series won the 2006 BROADCAST AWARD for BEST DRAMA SERIES adding to the series' successes at the National Television Awards (voted Most Popular Drama), TV Moments, and the BBC 2005 Drama Awards! The show's two stars (Eccleston and Piper) scooped the most popular actor and actress honors in the awards voted by the public. Dr. Who (2005)was also nominated for not only the 2006 HUGO Award (announcing winners on Aug 26), but on May 7th it WON 5 of the most prestigious award British Television has to offer: the BAFTAS Awards (British Academy of FILM and TELEVISION ARTS) out of the 14 categories it was nominated. Winning for BEST DRAMA SERIES, BEST DIRECTOR, BEST MAKE-UP, BEST COSTUME, BEST DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY and the PIONEER AUDIENCE AWARD which was voted for by the British public (kind of like the US People's Choice Award).Read full review
An assured start to the fiendishly difficult reinvention of a British instituition. Christopher Eccleston gives a unique spin to the Doctor's character (and coins the new catchphrase "fantastic") and Billie Piper is inspired casting as Rose. This volume sees the Doctor use the TARDIS to full advantage with a story set in the present ('Rose' featuring the return of the Autons from the Pertwee era), the future ('End of the World' featuring a decidely thin looking opponent) and the past ('The Unquiet Dead'). All the episodes are fast paced, self contained stories and see some sparkling script and acting. TUD is the best of the bunch with a marvellous Dickens story, and EOTW shows that the series has just enough money in it to put up believabel CGI and sets. The 'Rose' epsiode is the foundation stone - Rose's mum, boyfriend and life will all become central tom the new Who universe. In adiition although the episodes are standalone we get hints of what is to come - the time wars, Bad Wolf, the fate of the Time Lords.....) Proving the family viewing is not dead and buried as all the tv research people would have us believe, Doctor Who more than trounced oppoistion, seeing off Ant & Dec and forcing the transfer of Celebrity Wrestling to ITV 2. Excellent fare but one warning - they come with no extra's (you need to get the compete season 1 boxest).Read full review
This is a great DVD with 2 great opening episodes to introduce Rose (Billie Piper) as the new assistant, I think the only one that lets it down and stops it from getting an excellent rating is the Gelf episode which is a bit poorly made and seems slightly rushed to the finishing post. It is edited clunkily and it is not that convincing, slightly on the Prisoner Cell Block H lines. Some of the other episodes are far fetched too but they draw you in and captivate your interest from the start. In Rose, I like the way there is no formal introduction between the Doctor and Rose and that they are forced immediately to hold hands to escape the Autons which are imposing themselves upon Rose. In The End Of The World, escaping to a time when earth is about to implode and being a viewer to this event is a hugely dramatic event for Rose and the Doctor justas it is for the audience. Although a hugely distorted narrative, it is made believable by a touching human element in an ironically mostly non-human environment. I won't talk to much about the Gelf episode, it was set in Wales with Charles Dickens and random corpses coming to life. All a bit too confusing for my liking. Russell is allowed an off day and I think it showed here. Not to criticise too much though, there have been some quality episodes like Blink with the latest Doctor which is possibly one of my favourite episodes ever and will appear in another review in another part of time and space. For now, enjoy this DVD, action packed, most of the way through.Read full review
I really liked this item! I'm an avid Doctor Who fan so the chance to relive the first season was great! Beautiful viewing and convienient watching. A must have for any Dr Who/Sci Fi fan! Really nice artwork on the dvd packaging and easy to navigate. Not much to say about this item. Does what it says on the tin. Provides an easy, ondemand way of watching the first 3 episodes of Season 1 of the new Doctor Who series.
ive bought this for my son as he loves anything to do with doctor who he watches the tv series at present but i think he missed some of the first series so thats why i have bought this dvd. along with other series that ive bought this one will keep him ammused for few hours cause he loves doctor who.
I used to watch Doctor Who as a child (Tom Baker was my favourite then!) As I got older my viewing habits changed somewhat. Then I heard of the new series starring Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper, and I decided to watch out of interest. How glad I am that I did! I thought Mr Eccleston was excellent as the Doctor, and brought his own brand of humour as well as drama to the series. Billie Piper was a good match for him as his assistant Rose, portraying a typically London working girl, with a taste for adventure. When I saw the DVD on eBay in November, it was for a very reasonable starting bid, so I thought 'Why not?' I eventually won it, and it has been played almost every day since, my 3-year-old daughter having now become hooked! I now intend to collect the whole series' from the Christopher Eccleston episodes onwards, since David Tennant has also captured our hearts!Read full review
Ever since David Tennant became the new Doctor i have been glued to my TV and have loved every minute of every episode. I only really liked Doctor Who because he was in it, but i bought this DVD to see if Christopher Eccleston had the same effect and I LOVED IT!! Admittedly he is not as good as David Tennant as he is the BEST, SEXIEST Doctor ever!!! Now i am mad on Doctor Who and everyone thinks i'm crazy because i will collect anything!! I can't wait until December for the Christmas Special and the new series just feels like forever away!!!! IT'S GONNA BE FANTASTIC. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!
