This film features the cream of acting talent (bill murray and michael gambon to name but a couple). the story follows sea-life documentary film director Steve Zissou (murray) hunting down the shark that ate his friend in a quest to regain the status of his earlier acclaimed documentary work. The films documentary-esque style is interrupted with fantastically absurd scenes, some using animation, some featuring eastern pirates. the film is surreal in most parts but touching and believable in regards to the human journey of the characters. the dvd even includes secret easter eggs that show deleted scenes and outakes. the life aquatic is successful in being outrageously funny without even cracking a joke, the witty dialouge and actors responses keeps the film captivating throughout Zissou's voyage. definately 9/10!!Read full review
Great cult film. Tongue in cheek look at the career of Cousteau. Good fun with some very funny moments. The lead character signs up his long lost son to their ocean exploration team with the line "Great, I'll order you a red cap and some Speedos".
The life aquatic is the fourth full length offering from Wes Anderson. I would strongly advise anyone that is thinking of watching this film because they like Bill Murray, to watch the more accessible Rushmore beforehand. It is true to say that Anderson is quirky and downtempo, and if you like this and (importantly) understand it you will love this film. However if you look for other things in films and do not appreciate quirkyness then you wont like it and will probably post a ridiculous review stating this and giving it 1/5. I am a huge fan of both Bill Murray and Wes Anderson and thought this film was very good. For me the highlight was the exceptional performance of willem Defoe and the surreal animation in some scenes (which was provided by the makers of the nightmare before christmas). In summary, if you like: # Any other wes anderson film # Bill Murray at his most downtempo # Clever, witty and surreal comedies then you will like this film. If you don't you wont.Read full review
I primarily bought this DVD because my family and I enjoy a good comedy and I hoped this would fill the bill. As it futured Bill Murray, whom I have found quite comedic in some of his earlier films, I thought this was assured. I was sadly disappointed. This is one of the biggest load, of excrutiating drivel, it has been my misfortune to see. My family and I, watched the film from the beginning, hoping it could only improve, to the end. It didn't. The Life Aquatic, in my and my families view, sunk without trace. I would advise anyone looking to watch this film, masochists accepted, not to bother. Save your money and your sanity.
I am writing this review to try and ensure that nobody makes the mistake of buying this dvd! You may have heard of it and thought it sounded okay and that you quite like Bill Murray. Well I like Bill Murray, I think films such as Groundhog Day and Scrooged are great, but believe me, trust me, this is NOT!! This film is the strangest, weirdest, most mystifying, most confused, most pointless pile of pants that has ever been made. What the makers of this film were thinking I do not know. You get the sense that it is trying to be clever in a quirky, 'offbeat' way, but it really doesn't achieve that at all. All it makes you think is that with this AND Lost in Translation Bill Murray appears to have lost the plot. Unless you have the strangest sense of humour ever and quite like the thought of watching a very surreal, low budget (almost student movie) and 'ironic' (or not) movie then do not ever waste your time and watch this film. I'm glad I only saw it on rental and never actually bought it because if I had I would be using the disc as a frisbee for my non-existent dog to catch in its mouth. AVOID!!!Read full review
