As a fan of Arnold since 1970 I have to humbly disagree with one reviewer who said he didn't know how Arnold became Gov of California because "he's not the sharpest tool in the box". Er, give me a break Snow White..! From the beginning of his career as a bodybuilder, aged 15, he was totally 'on the ball' allegedly jacking up with massive amounts of steroids, thanks to a doctor friend from the same club in Graz, Austria. Then he came to England after winning the strongest man in Europe, aged 18 and fell in with the most influential English body building promoters. Mr Universe, aged 20..! From there he struck deals with Joe Weider, a powerful bodybuilder competition promoter in America; and the most iconic gym, Gold’s. He made sure, unlike most, that he got a ‘fair shake’ of the supplements, training, gyms and equipment endorsements deal. In the meantime he took a business degree and opened a real estate company. Became a millionaire by aged 22. “After taking English classes at Santa Monica College in California, he earned a BA by correspondence from the University of Wisconsin–Superior, where he graduated with a degree in international marketing of fitness and business administration in 1979”. WIKI. Psyched out his competitors before going on the podium. Remained undefeated for over 12 years. And co-wrote Arnold’s Encyclopaedia of Bodybuilding. Made $300+ million dollars in Hollywood, (and through his real estate business), with films like: Cactus Jack (aka The Villain),The Conan series, The Terminator series, Commando, Predator, Raw Deal, Kindergarten Cop, End of Days, Red Heat, The 6th Day, Running Man, Eraser, Last Action Hero, Twins, etc. etc Then he married into the most powerful family in America, the Kennedy’s, was appointed chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports by President George H. This film is one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's first outings into film. It is based around Schwarzenegger training and preparing for a bodybuilding contest and gives viewers a good insight into what exercises arnie uses, but more importantly the technique he employs. I feel that this film most reflects what arnie is like in real life - a wise cracking, confident and determined individual in his most familiar surroundings. Howveve, I feel that there is not enough of arnie on screen but the film's more focal point is the love/romance between jeff bridges and sally field who are Arnie's best friends in the film. A must for any bodybuilding fan
An unusual story set in the bodybuilding sub culture with some memorable scenes. Unfortunately the film becomes quite unhinged towards the end and gets very bizarre, some of the plot threads just don't quite hang together. Despite the flaws the film still possesses quite a lot of charm, it's a vivid glimpse back to the easy going side of the 1970s life style. Worth seeing for it's unusual subject matter and early performances by Jeff Bridges, Sally Field and a young Austrian bodybuilder with the curious surname of Schwarzenegger!
