  • Better Than I Could Have Hoped

So, my receiver arrived five days earlier than estimated, so I got to hook it up and test drive it. Here's what I found: The good: Are you sure this is a used unit? It looks like it was just taken out of the original box and shipped straight to me. Surface scratches are few and far between, and the ones I can see are so small they really have to be hunted for. The display center is scratch free. There is no notable corrosion or wear on the RCA terminals or screws. It really looks like a new receiver. I can tell it was not abused by its original owner All speaker terminals that were tested work. I did test the surround channels while I was deciding the best wiring method for FM stereo/MPS playback. Ultimately, I wired to both A and B channels, fronts only on A, as it is being used as an outdoor receiver for music. I say outdoor but it's in a shed wired to all weather speakers mounted outside, so it will be protected from the elements. I have not connected a subwoofer yet, but will test that soon. I have no doubt that it will work. The sound: As with any receiver, it needs to be dialed in. It sounded somewhat like a transistor radio at first, but once I dug through the setup menu, I was able to find the adjustment options relatively quickly and adjust bass, treble, individual speaker levels, and the proper audio decoding selection for optimal playback of music. I am somewhat familiar with the way Sony does things, so this wasn't too difficult for me to accomplish without referencing the manual. I still have some speakers to install, so I will dig deeper over the upcoming weekend and see what this thing can really do. So far, through a pair of Kicker KB6000s at leisurely listening volume, it seems to be fully capable of delivering quality audio. The bad: The one bad note. Sony decided that they achieved perfection in their sound quality, so you no longer have a need, or a way to hook up an external equalizer. The sounds quality is good, but they should have left the tape monitor channel on there and left the decision to the end user. Apparently, Sony doesn't know Stereo-heads. Even in this advanced tech world, we still like our components and tweaking the sound. Overall this is a quality unit for an unbelievable price. It's not feature packed if you're looking for the latest in surround sound, but it's more than ample for an outdoor stereo system. Add an external bluetooth receiver, and you're set. One last note. If you do buy this, or any other receiver, please get to know the menu and options before you rate it. I've seen a lot of people giving low ratings because their new equipment doesn't do what they want it to.... when in actuality, it does, they just don't know how to find it or adjust it.
