Christian Bale is awesome in this movie. He plays the character Trevor Reznik who is literally wasting away due to the on going insomnia and angst he suffers from. Bale shows true star quality and depth in the lengths he will go to physically to fulfil this role. Aside from the breathtaking (and not for the faint hearted) look he achieved for this movie, he must not only be remembered for the weight loss but for the dark and moody portrayal of a man destroying himself with guilt. Reznik is tired, worried, paranoid and delusional. He is living in a world of twilight and dreams, in fact, his world is somewhere between the imaginary and reality. He is constantly receiving strange messages and threatening notes that lead him further into a state of paranoia. With his constant worry and lack of sleep, it is not long before his work suffers and he is responsible for an accident at his factory. This only deepens his anxiety and pushes him further toward the female characters within the movie. Jennifer Jason Leigh turns in a strong performance as a shoulder to cry on for the tortured Reznik and once again shows a desperate character (Similar to Last Exit to Brooklyn) that is unable to change her life and so is hooked emotionally to others and their worldly problems. With the sombre tones of this film and the eerie filming I would advise moviegoers to be aware that this is by no means a movie that will fill you with happiness. With the inevitable twist at the end and the general dark and desperate world that the characters reside in, I would advise watching this movie if you are interested in Method acting at its best and deep exploration of characters and their relationships. 10 out of 10 for acting and directionRead full review
This film is almost unique to any other I have watched...perhaps this is due to the amazing performance of its lead actor. The weight loss alone is worth its excellant rating!!! The story is (without giving away the plot!) a fresh new approach to the pyschological twist thrillers often churned out by the movie industry. If you just want fast action then this film is not for you but if you want something more intellectual and thought provoking then grab a look!
This is one of my favourite films,watched it by accident,and could'nt take my eyes off it,brilliat performance by Bale,iv'e watched it many times since.
