This is a story about a father and son who are seeking a better life in Denmark after the death of wife/mother. There is a huge age gap, little Pelle was a long time comming, and the father is getting old and well past his prime. The story is about him having to face up to the fact that he is no longer the young and strong and powerful man he used to be, and he is not able to protect his son from the bullying and outright nastiness which everybody at the large country estate has to suffer under. It also sweeps into the lives and plights of several of the people Pelle befriends over the next 2 years, and their hopes and dreams being quashed by the harshness of their existence. Not an easy film to watch, it touches many subjects with merciless reality, but through all this the optimism and realism of little Pelle is shining through.Read full review
Bought it because I caught the end on TV and wanted to see it. Very sad but powerful drama about a boy who puts his faith in his weak grandad and after some disturbing experiences realises he needs to make it on his own. Comming of age type thing. You have to be able to read to follow it as it is in Swedish. Some very disturbing scenes of bullying (not by grandad who is lovely but weak)
As the main distributor of all Scandinavian feature films here in the UK during the years 1965 - 1995, this is the one title I missed.
