Originally planned as a children's show 'Do Not Adjust Your Set' soon gained a large adult following. With music interludes by Neil Innes' Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band and animations by Terry Gilliam the programme brought together some of the great writers and performers who would eventually create Monty Python.
If you are a fan of Monty Python, David Jason or the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah band, you will not be disappointed with this box set. Although shot in black and white and probably at the old 425 lines resolution, this DVD set is well worth owning. Bear in mind that ithe series was written for an under 15 tea time audience, you will be surprised how much of it will make you laugh and of course due to the heavy percentage of later Monty Python performers involved - Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle and Michael Palin, you will see definate patterns in those early sketches which came out later as threads of some Monty Python episodes. A young David Jason shows his charachter actor versatility and ability from an early age, which he was later to use in Porridge, and many other roles since. Denise Coffey, although the only major female performer in the show is no mere pretty wallpaper, she is a very capable performer and writer and deserved a bigger helping of fame than she has received. Lastly, the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah band, provide musical interludes and the alternative and TV studio versions of their songs are worth having alone. Considering the age of this program (40 years plus), what was permissiable to say then on TV, and how much TV has moved on since, this series still stands up, is still funny although a bit corny in parts, but it has not really dated largely to the later fame of Monty Python (nd its staff of writers), which established its own accepted comedy benchmark.Read full review
I watched this as a very small child (4 yrs old!) and had vague memories of it. The DVD is excellent, despite the poor quality of the black and white footage. Unfortunately of the numerous episodes recorded, only 9 appear on the dvd- perhaps these are the only survivors, which would be a shame. This DVD is essential for fans of the Bonzo Dog Band (the resident group on the show), as well as Monty Python/ Rutland Weekend fans. Also, your kids will love it! 10 out of 10, but lets hope they find some more episodes!
When the dvd starts the Rediffusion London sets the mood in B/W Bonzo dog numbers still funny. Interesting to see the construction of sketches some still very good. Did bring back memories of tv straight after school. Even though I am a big MPFC fan I had no idea that the do not team were made up of 2/3rds MPFC team. For the price I paid (£5) this is a bargain. I am sure todays sketch writers could update and copy these and get away with it!
