Stander is supposedly the true story of a South African cop, Captain Andre Stander (Thomas Jane), who attained Mythic status as a Robin Hood-style robber in '70s S.A. After shooting an unarmed Black protester in a Township confrontation, Stander rebels against his status as a member of the White elite by carrying out bank hold-ups in his lunch hour. The tale continues as a battle against his former comrades-in-arms, who are shocked by his "betrayal", through discovery,capture, escape and a subsequent crime-spree and man-hunt; it all ends in Florida, a place Stander has longed to see. I won't tell you how. I got this movie on the recommendation of South African work-mates, who raved about it and it's easy to see why. It accurately mimics the attitudes and politics of the time, as well as the fashions and over-abundance of facial hair. Jane is well supported by the cast and plays Stander sympathetically and well, in sync with the major underlying question that this intelligent movie poses it's audience - is Stander rebelling against his heritage and environment, or is he simply an adrenalin-fuelled thrill junkie? The dangerous and daring, charming and cool Stander depicted here could well be both. The riot scene near the begining of the film thrusts you into 1970's South Africa. Stander is a true story set in 1976, of a young police captain in Johannesburg called Andre Stander. When he kills an unarmed black man during the riot, Stander makes a decision to defy the system and turn his back on the law. Stander starts robbing banks. He becomes more and more successful at leading this double life as a criminal and a cop until he is arrested by one of his best friends. This is where the second chapter of the film starts and Andre establishes the Stander gang. I'll say no any more, so that I don't spoil the film for those of you that have not seen it yet. Thomas Jane and the rest of the crew are all brilliant and I belive this to be a real gem of a film.
The bad old days in SA really were like that! The acting is good and the background and screen sets are very realistic/ excellent.
