A desperately sad powerful intense film about the destructive legacy of one man, Glen Whitehouse (James Coburn, who won an Oscar for this role). A violent, abusive alcoholic with a dominant attitude towards his family, he terrorises his wife and two children. The elder child, Wade, grew up to be an angry adult, played by Nick Nolte (Oscar nominated). Whilst his younger brother flees the town and family as soon as he is able, Wade cannot escape either in mind or body, but is sucked into the same mentality of his father, despite the fact he despises everything about him. No matter how hard he tries to build a good life or make a difference in a small town, he is on a downward spiral and cannot escape his own demons. Sissy Spacek is excellent as Wade’s girlfriend who loves him but in the end sadly rejects him, as does his daughter Jill. Stunning performances from all, and a film to make you think and reflect on just how difficult it is to escape the legacy of abuse, and what it can do to a person’s heart and soul. Difficult to watch at times; slow, heavy and suffocating, but a film to really make you think about life, and you really feel for the main character as he starts to crack.Read full review
