Early in 1977 a retired NATO general called together six of his collegues--including an admiral, an airman, an economist and a diplomat--to write a dramatized game-plan for the next world war. A sensational international bestseller, it is a vivid, detailed, and often blood-curdling on-the-spot report from the battle fronts of a "real war", from tank assaults to air clashes to ICBM launchings, based on an insiders knowledge of weaponry and actual NATO and Soviet battle strategies. In the light of changes in Eastern Europe the question now is: Could it ever have happened? Could it ever happen again?

  • Interesting reading, but slightly textbook in style.

This fictional novel chronicles a war between the western allies (NATO) and the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies. The author gives details about the conditions leading up to the war, the effects of the conflict, and the results of a limited nuclear exchange that brings about the end of the war. The conflict was set in 1985, but makes points when it relates how the NATO members had been lulled into complacency preceeding the war, how geopolitics and military preparedness should bear close attention instead of insular withdrawal.

  • The Third World War, how it could have happened, most realistic, easy reading

This is a military fiction story that holds the reader's interest and appears to be very realistic as one event rolls into another. Twenty-eight chapters provide the content and are not excessive in length, thus providing appropriate opportunities for a break in reading. Early in the book is a table of abbreviations that are used in the book making it easy to understand a lot of military jargon. An excellent book and a great value when purchased second hand.
