I hadn't seen this film in years having had it on VHS. A missile strike, a response and counter strike all follow the Standard Operating Procedures. Everyone is trying to do the right thing. Is that the wrong thing? Are the systems meant to keep everyone safe leading to inevitable Mutual Assured Destruction? A few bits of corniness but a pretty fair crack at a Nuclear Armageddon scenario that nobody wants but takes on a life of its own.

I imagined more people wrote a review about this movie but I was surprised when E-Bay e-mailed me to "be the first to review." Well, here I go. Just like the title says, this movie has been favorite movie since high school. Remember back in early 80's the "War Game" and "Day After Tomorrow" gave us the creeps. This too made me think how easy to start a war and how single mad man can destroy the world. I am from Japan. We are still living this scary thought daily with N. Korea so close. From the economy side, China is devouring so much natural resources that the country is jacking-up the cost of resources. But this movie does not end there, the heros or the men and women with common sense, saves the day.
This rollercoaster of a ride takes us back to the 1980s and the time when Strategic Air Command still existed for one purpose: the orchestration of Nuclear Strike against what was then known as the USSR. Bitterly embattled in the Cold War and collectively known as 'The Superpowers' this movie is an extremely well researched rendition of how life would have suddenly become for those 'Superpowers' had it ever gone wrong. The lead characters are strong - Martin Landau as the president and Jeffrey DeMunn in charge of the United States Navy especially. The way the film represents the unthinkable pressure Martin Landau's character is under, previously known to nobody adds to the realism making up for somebody just happening to 'go fly a nuke that detonates over (what is now) Ukraine' starting it all off - I suppose that some Poetic License can be allowed now that this is a film about the past even in the event of World War 3. A definite 8/10.Read full review
I remember the original 'failsafe', of similar ilk, which scared the heck out of me when I was young. that film is a little dated now but this one will stand the test of time. the acting is excellent throughout, with the possible exception of rip torns slightly overzealous military character who doesnt quite hit the mark for me. it sets out a series of events which never happened but we all imagined could quite easily occur, and does so extremely well. if you want gung-ho action then this is not for you. if you wish for serious drama, well presented, that will provoke some thought then this is the kiddie. Possibly less of a worry too now that the states has a new more sensible chief executive :-) I wont spoil it any more except to say that the expression 'grand tour' takes on a whole new meaning and close by saying that this film would grace anyone's top 50.Read full review
