Product Information

While biking, hiking, or out for an excursion, keep the Garmin eMap handy. You'll be able to navigate your way without cumbersome paper maps or GPS systems that require a plugin. With a 4 level grayscale LCD display for high-contrast visibility, this GPS mapping device reads easily at night or during the day. It also has an audible alarm at your destination. The Garmin eMap also works well as a nautical navigation system. The signal is strong enough to penetrate most sea smoke and help you get back to land. This GPS also has an external antennae hookup for when you need to penetrate thicker fog. The eMap is waterproof-rated IPX2, meaning it is resistant to small amounts of water at certain angles. The eMap's one-second continuous GPS synchronization rate also allows you to monitor your speed on land or water. In clear weather, the Garmin eMap handheld GPS is generally accurate to 15 feet of your real position. This, coupled with its efficient battery life, makes it an ideal tool for geocachers. The eMap can track your mileage and elevation as you hike. It can give your latitude and longitude, making it easy to meet up with friends for hiking or camping. You can use the Go To function to receive an ETA as well as track your progress on the trail. The Garmin eMap also allows you to set your own waypoints, also known as datums, on land or sea. Datums are reference points for navigating in a 3-D world. Older maps also used datums, but they generally only defined either a horizontal or a vertical measuring model. Garmin GPS units allow you to define over 100 datums when marking your own waypoints. The eMap could even help you navigate a pirate treasure map once you interpreted the correct datums from the legend. Simply press the Go To button twice in a row to create a waypoint at your location. With two AA batteries, you get up to 12 hours of map data on an extra-large display. Garmin's eMap contains maps of North and South America, including geographical locations, streets, highways, and airports. It is small enough to put in your pocket or purse. It can replace that atlas stuffed in your glove compartment with room left over for an extra set of batteries and other traveling accessories. For long trips, extra detailed road and location maps can be downloaded onto your unit before travel. Using the MapSource MetroGuide software, simply download the map files onto your PC, and then transfer them to your handheld unit. Expandable memory cards can be used to allow you to download every map you need for your trip before you ever leave home. Easily find your way to a new restaurant, beach, or bike path with this Garmin GPS. Make traveling even easier by opting for a variety of accessories, so you'll always have power and a mount for your device. An external antenna, handlebar mount, dashboard mount, USB converter cable, and vehicle power cable all work great with the Garmin eMap to give you an enjoyable traveling experience.

  • Great GPS

As an older guy with eye issues, i find the Garmin E-Map screen easy to view and easy to load up the mapsource cd-rom. I'm a low tech person and related to this GPS very well. I also like the Sun/Moon feature too. As far as the weather proof complaints in earlier reviews just get a cell phone waterproof pouch that you can operate the E-Map thru the clear plastic. Yes, i would buy again sinse they are cheaper now, but get a bigger memory card, holds up to 128mb.

  • Garmin is a good choice for boaters

The unit functions well, once you read the instructions. Converted it to nautical scale and it reads sped in knots. Most of the other handhelds cannot do this.

  • eMAP

This eMAP runs for many hours longer, on a pair of AA, than one with color screen, great for field work. Response time is quicker than I had envisioned.
