Andy's got a problem,He's had it all his life,He's forty and a virgin And this cuts him like a knife. If you're not a religious prude, you will probably enjoy more than a few laughs here. I was expecting something grosser and juvenile, but was pleasantly suprised to find I could laugh all the way through this and not feel like a moron afterwards. It has something for everybody, and I could readily see why it was a huge hit on both sides of the atlantic. Although not overly gross, it wont dissapoint that type of comedy fan, while at the same time the portrayal of the main character is sympathetic enough both to invite empathy from any 40 year old virgins in the audience, and all the sexually clumsy college kids who came in for the National Lampoon humour. It even has a slightly romantic and syrupy ending for the girls.Read full review
This DVD had all the signs of being a bit ridiculous and cringeworthy, but to be fair it isn't actually that bad. The plot is pretty simple - the main character hasn't had sex by the age of 40. He has a house full of kid's toys etc from his own childhood, which he sells on Ebay with the help of his girlfriend who is unaware of his inexperience and amazed at the extent of his restraint. Their romance develops as he is egged on by a trio of decidedly dodgy friends who act as tempters to get him to sleep with anyone...but who eventually see the error of their ways (to an extent), hence the slightly saccharine moralistic overtone (it is American, after all). A good laugh with some funny moments, but I don't think that many Oscars will be forthcoming...!
Andy (Steve Carell) may be 40 and a virgin with a low-level job working in shipping and receiving at an electronics store, but he is content to ride his bike home every night to his apartment filled with action figures, movie posters, and other collectibles. At least he's happy until his co-workers find out he's never had sex and take it upon themselves to get Andy a woman. They take him to a bar to meet easy drunk women (which ends in a rather nasty situation); they have him practice on the cute girl (Elizabeth Banks) who works in the bookstore across the street; they even give him all the pointers they know but nothing seems to work. Until Trish (Catherine Keener) walks into the store and Andy falls hard - they eventually start dating (after more lessons from the guys) and decide to "take it slow", which is fine with Andy, but if they go any slower Andy is going to die a virgin. As it turns out, Andy's buddies aren't all that thrilled with their sex lives either - David (Paul Rudd) is obsessing over the girl he lost 2 years ago; Jay (Romany Malco) is a playa with a girlfriend he has to lie to constantly; Cal (Seth Rogen) is mostly talk; and the boss (Jane Lynch) offers to help Andy get over his condition because she wants a little action on the side - no strings attached. At first you think this is going to be another one of those "guy comedies" where the jokes are raunchy, gross, offensive, or they include an excessive amount of bodily fluids (although sometimes crass can be funny - it's not in this case). About halfway through the movie, it takes a huge turn - it settles down into a rhythm that works. It gets sweet (but not sickeningly so), the humor rises above the juvenile-frat level (but not too far), and the characters turn out to be more than 2-dimensional stereotypes. Steve Carell does a terrific job of being the introvert (without being pathetic or annoying) as well as the guy coming out of his shell with an innocent charm that's quite endearing. A lot of the scenes look like sketch bits that don't really advance the story: Steve Carell suffering through a chest waxing (for real), the guys watching naughty videos and horror films on the store TVs, the running comments about "You know how I know you're gay," and the big choreographed production number at the end. That's not to say they aren't really funny, but... This goes on far too long for a comedy. It makes it hard to recommend, because you have to see some of the stuff that happens in the first hour to really appreciate the second, but it also makes it more difficult to get into the movie when the first half is not all that. It's a tough call, but it might be better as a rental (at least you'll probably get bloopers and other goodies then).Read full review
Good dvd about a 40 year man thats never had sex.One his mates find out they csn't believe and and trying to make him have sex at every opportunity. It doesn't work out that way as their advice isn't that good.In the end he meets Trish they get married and afterwards they have sex.A good film which is quite funny.
I'm a big fan of comedy but I'm not too impressed with most modern films. When my wife hired this out I thought it was going to be terrible. I don't really go for this type of film or so I thought. I have to say I haven't laughed out loud so much during a film for years. The idea was a bit daft but the script and characters were faultless. My dvd collection consists mainly of stand up and very few films. This is now one of those few films. Even the extras on this dvd are worth watching. If you watch this film and don't laugh, you need to check you have a pulse. Highly recommended.
Raunchy, crude, foul-mouthed comedy about the misadventures of a 40-something guy who has never slept with a woman. Some good belly-laughs along the way. You would not want your grandma to see this one.
