  • Brilliant Commentary on American Politics & Society From Days Long Past

I first heard of H.L. Mencken via one of his famous quotes, "Love is the delusion that one woman differs from all the rest." He is a marvel of the written word, he must have been quite the intellect as his writings, for the new reader, will likely require said reader to use a dictionary and a thesaurus to understand some of the words and terms he uses. He had a special disdain for politicians of both parties whom he saw as lacking in character and/or intellect and he sketched them with resoundingly cynical sarcasm. Wonderful reading! When I read that he saw Franklin Roosevelt's idea of the Federal Government was, "A milch cow with 125 million teats" I almost fell off my chair laughing. (I also suggest having your PC handy to translate some of the German terms he is fond of using as, apparently, he was fluent in German as well as English.) A brilliant man, brilliant prose, a brilliant book. Just my $0.02.
