The story behind a photograph conceived by Esquire Magazine art director Art Kane. He gathered all the greats in the Jazz world for a group shot on a sultry summer day on 125th Street in Harlem, 1958. With a "cast" that includes Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, and Art Blakely, this documentary provides a rare glimpse into the close-knit, warm world of the Jazz era, as well as some heartwarming and amusing footage of legends just being themselves.

    A superb film on a great subject.

    A terrific film about a great subject; the taking of a photograph of 57 of the most prominent jazz musicians alive in New York in 1958. Fortunately, many of the principals involved were still alive to contribute engaging interviews of their memories of the event. No wonder it won the 1995 Oscar for best documentary. The special features profile each participant in detail, it's a jazz lover's dream.

    A Swingin' Story!

    I originally bought this on VHS when it first was released, and always enjoyed watching it-so much when this came up on Ebay , I had to own it again! One of the great stories in jazz, and the DVD has lots of extra content.
