STORMY WEATHER 1943 Andrew L Stone */** This is sadly just a bit of cultural tokenism; Hollywood doffing it’s cap to Afro-American culture. (Though as far as I can determine Stone the director was white). It also, I feel smacks of the ghettoism that was rampant in Hollywood at the time– an all black cast with not a white person in sight - (a Martian seeing this film would think the planet was only inhabited by black people). Also highly iffy representations where black women sing and skinny black men are flashy and just plain show-offs, - not to mention golliwogs cropping up in one set of costumes. The plot is minimal and merely there to hitch together a load of what looks like novelty or gimmick acts. The story is supposed to depict the life of Bill (Bojangles) Robinson, a famous black American dancer (he tells his own story to a bunch of children sat on the porch of his country cottage) and his longing love for Selina (Lena Horne) whom apparently never existed in real life, so what little plot there is a load of nonsense anyway. Of course the main reason now for watching this is for the cast: As already mentioned Horne and Bojangles, also Cab Calloway and his band and an all too brief appearance of the great Fats Waller.Read full review
The Old Black and white film is a classic music and dance which has a good story line. For me it's full of characters especially Lena Horne, Fats Waller and the Nicholas brothers.

Loved this film! A completely black cast, which made a change. Wonderful singers and wonderful dancers. Takes you right back to the early days. Such talent. Very pleased.
