I'm in love with this saw and set up! Not much more to say really. Feels fairly safe when using the tip. Running chain a little loose. In fact, this is my first gas chainsaw and first time attempting to carve with one. Been using every other power tool you can think of for a couple years though. Thanks. Really happy with this!!!

Do I recommend: Yes with caution. You will need to work to get good fit/finish. Is it good value: for the money yes. If you expect great value then hahahahaha, keep dreaming. Is it of good quality: Meh, could be LOTS better. It will probably work fine. Not great. Packaging was a little skimpy and parts were thrown in a box then placed in a padded express envelope. You could tell it had been thrown about during shipping to the vendor or in shipping. There were dings and dents in some of the parts- not enough to warrant a return, but enough to create some clean-up work. The bottom is not completely flat and had flashing from the casting process. Looks like it's old tooling because the galleys for were plugged up in some spots. Piston had some scratches on the top, again, not enough to make me return it but not pretty-won't affect the function. As long as you are willing to do some clean up this should be serviceable. Some of the cooling fins were bent, not straight, one had a tiny crack but won't affect function. If you expect OEM finish go elsewhere. Circlips are typical Chinese garbage, use OEM if you want the wrist pin to not come loose and blow out the cylinder wall. What do you expect for $25? This is not to be used as a showpiece. At first blush the MS 170 might seem a bit costly for a small saw but don't let that put you off. In most cases you get what you pay for and this is no exception. You'll forget all about that the first day you spend in the yard cutting firewood or limbing a tree and the saw doesn't talk back once. It is VERY intelligently designed and not only delivers a lot of power for such a small displacement engine it also easy to make adjustments i.e. fuel mix, chain tension etc. or maintenance i.e. air filter, plug or unclogging chain oiler holes. On other lesser home owner type saws you can't even make carb adjustments (which at some point you will need to do) unless you take it to the shop and drop $50. Low vibration, light weight and easy to start this is the absolute perfect 'first saw' if you've never run one before or for doing arborist type work. Comes stock with a 14" bar I've found I prefer a 16". My only gripe would be low fuel capacity but again the location of the filler makes that faster than a pit stop at indy. Don't come any better.Read full review
This engine is GREAT! I used to buy Huztl engines and cylinder kits but the last 4 or 5 I purchased had seal and also casting problems....they leak and won't hold pressure or vacuum. This engine is much better quality castings and it runs just as good as a Stihl engine. After trying 2 of these I bought 2 more and I'll buy again.

Comes assembled that was o.k. until I put it in the saw. The mounting screws are a different size thread than the original one so I had to purchase different ones to assembly it. Then it took a hole lot of pulling the crank to get it to start and when it finally did start it ran a few minutes and died. Repeated process three or four times and gave up on it. Its junk!!!

I have a new MS170 that ran ok for the first few tanks then wouldn't idle was low on power. I put this carburetor on removed the intake insert or restriction tuned this carb and now my saw has way more power cuts great and idles just fine and I can adjust it needed. Love my little saw now goes with me on the quad trips now.

Found it interesting that Stihl so jealously guards their technology, that I could not find an OEM replacement engine on the internet. My original engine failed with a broken piston connecting rod. The engine ordered from this web site was an exact fit but the orginal Stihl coarse thread metric bolts did not fit for mounting the engine or the ignition coil. I had to use fine thread metric bolts of the same length and it bolted up and ran fine. I had about 3-4 years of use out of the original Stihl engine. I will have to see how this one holds up.

Carb, fuel filter and line installed with spark plug and filter no problem. The gasket did not have a hole for the vacuum port. This won’t allow the fuel pump on the carb to work. Simply make your own small hole with a scribe or drill bit in the gasket and it works great.

Assembly went pretty easy. The only problems I had were the threads are not the same as O.E. so I had to buy new screws to assemble and attach to saw. The other was the exhaust bolt didn't clear the cooling fin so I had to grind the fin with a dremmel, other than that no special tools to install.

I want to thank you for adding a few extra items, eggs gaskets, that I found that I needed. The Ms 180 I bought did not have them and it had the wrong carburator on it. It now has the right carburator, thanks to you. I will remember. I have used just about every item in the box you sent me.
