  • Worth watching for newcomers to and veterans of Dr. Who, but also interesting to see the experimental origins of television drama.

Brings back memories and even felt some of the tension that the original broadcast induced as a child. No recording, playback, rewind, pause at the time - no break for putting the kettle on - sit and watch or miss it! As a family! This time I didn't have to wait a week between each episode! Useful for newcomers to Doctor Who to see it's origins. Some have been critical of the production quality, which is stupid as it was made in the very early days of TV - HALF A CENTURY ago - and it is this sort of innovation that allowed the evolution of television that most take for granted these days. Much today depends on great CGI but lacks creative content or storyline; imagination is not needed and content is shallow and unsubstantial - this DVD series is the inverse. Interesting to see the early days of acting for television as well - they were all new to it and understandably sometimes awkward. But they were less pretentious and able to speak in English, contrary to so much multi-channel illiterate rubbish we have to endure now. Imagination allowed us to make it real even though we were fully aware of the made up sets. It was reassuring that I could again feel that, especially now when everything is so much more technically sophisticated by composition. Not just nostalgia it turned out, but a stark realisation of what we've lost, not just the obvious expectation of what we've gained.
