If you're looking for a movie that has a straightforward and easy to decipher plot, this is NOT for you. The movie is complex with the spiritual concept of reincarnation connecting the various stories over hundreds of years. There's also an underlying theme of enslavement in obvious and more subtle forms throughout the chapters in the movie. This is the type of movie that needs to be viewed several times to understand and appreciate. Disjointed Challenge for the Viewer
Cloud Atlas seemed to have an interesting story line, particularly given that the same actors appear as different characters over large time gaps. The make-up effects were what drew my attention in this purchase.. Visually there were interesting aspects, however, the whole effect was disjointed, and created an unsettling feeling, which was bothersome in trying to follow the flashbacks in the time sequences. Elaborate, complex and well written science fiction adventure
I’m surprised the movie wasn’t much more popular. I thought it was extremely well written, intricate and kept my attention nonstop. I actually watched it twice in a row in order to make sure I understood how all the characters connected with each other. Tom Hanks’ acting is amazing. He plays so many different roles so believably. Compelling worthwhile labyrinth!
It has become one of my favorite films, as has The Illusionist & some others. Suggestion: turn on subtitles for better understanding. In some passages there are dialects that are easier to understand in context. I found it very engaging- it is like looking at light through a multi faceted prism; many scattered beams weaving a larger theme- definitely outside the envelope of standard presentation but it's very coherently put together if you're paying attention. Reminds me of looking at some of MC Escher's art. This will appeal more to people who like mental challenges & have a spiritual adventuresome quality. To those with certain experience, no explanation necessary. to those without experience, no explanation possible. It's a bit like that.... again- captions helpful. A movie you must follow closely, enjoyed watching a great cast of chacters, Tom Hanks like you've never seen him before, along with Halle Berry and Hugh Grant, plus others.
