Must have German expressionism
You've heard of THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI, where an evil carnival barker uses his zombie for vengeance, and this later German expressionist classic is well worth owning too. It's also set in a carnival, but the evil complications come from the dreams that a writer has who wants to work for the wax museum on site. Conrad Veidt plays Ivan The Terrible and is worth the price of admission alone. Ivan is pretty crazy to begin with even at the start of this segment of the movie and it doesn't take much to push him the rest of the way. There are, by the way, three segments in all, stories the writer creates for the wax works exhibits. The first story, set in an Arabian Nights setting greatly influenced Douglas Fairbanks when he made THE THIEF OF BAGDAD. The Kino release is first rate and is a wonderful restoration.
